Home Security Solution – Getting it Back
When it comes to home security, our main focus is on protecting ourselves, our family, and our valuables. But what do we do if we can’t actually prevent a break-in from occurring?
How do we get our stuff back?
There are a few things that you can do to help the police in case your home get broken into and the burglar gets away with your valuables.
- Keep a list. The first thing that you want to do is to keep an inventory (a list) of all the valuables that you own. This list should include a good description of the item along with the model and/or serial number if it has one.
- Take pictures. Once you have your list, it’s a good idea to also take a photo of the object itself. I think that it’s a good idea to go around your home and take pictures of everything in it’s normal place. My reason for this is because if you do happen to experience a break-in, you will probably be more than a little shaken up and unable to think clearly. Having photos can help you to identify what is missing.
- Put your name on it. The best way for the police to be able to identify your property is if they see your name on it. The best way to do this is to have your valuables engraved but if you can’t do that, then at the very least put a simple security label on it.
Here is a short video on how to put labels on your valuables:

Obviously engraving your items is a more permanent home security solution. Let’s face it – someone could remove a simple label rather easily. But if that’s all that you have, it’s better than doing nothing.
It is up to you to do all that you can to protect your yourself, your family, and your valuables from burglary. We live in a time when we can’t rely on everyone to do the right thing on their own. Actually, I guess it’s always been that way but now that there are more of us in the world, we have to be a little more cautious.
